Samsung launches the GALAXY Note 10.1

As expected, Samsung Electronics has launched the GALAXY Note 10.1, a super-sized tablet edition of the manufacturer’s popular smartphone which is already quite large in its own right. Samsung is making the device available in a number of colors (black and white), sizes (16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of internal memory), and networking capabilities (WiFi only, WiFi and 3G HSPA+, or WiFi and LTE).

Each GALAXY Note tablet comes equipped with a 10.1-inch screen, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 7,000mAh battery. You’ll also find a 5MP camera opposite a 1.9MP front-facing camera, a microSD card slot with support for up to 64GB, and the company’s trademark 6.5mm S Pen.

Samsung is quite proud of the tablet’s side-by-side multitasking and its suite of preinstalled apps, which include S Note, S Planner, Crayon physics, Polaris Office, Shape Match, Formula Match, Smart Stay, Pop Up Play, AllShare Play, a Learning Hub, and – believe it or not – Photoshop Touch.

The Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 is available now in the US, UK, Germany, and Korea, but you’ll have to wait a bit longer for the LTE-enabled version. Other markets are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

Samsung to release a 10.1-inch Galaxy Note-branded tablet on August 15?

Samsung 10 1 Galaxy Note Event Samsung to release a 10.1 inch Galaxy Note branded tablet on August 15?Samsung might be preparing to release a super-sized version of its already enormous smartphone, the Galaxy Note, at an upcoming event on August 15. This new device is reportedly of the 10.1-inch variety, putting it squarely in the tablet camp rather than somewhere mid-way between a smartphone and a tablet like the current model.

The invite for the South Korean manufacturer’s event, which was sent out to multiple tech outlets, clearly depicts a tablet form-factor. The design also seems to have been heavily influenced by the Galaxy Note’s artistic stylings. Put two and two together and you have the 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Note tablet, which was announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

We’ll know more starting at 11:00 a.m. Eastern on August 15, when Samsung is scheduled to hold its event in New York. The Galaxy Note has been quite popular with smartphone owners, but will it continue to succeed in the tablet space?

Judge rules that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad, Apple forced to advertise as such

Samsung This Is Not An Apple Product Judge rules that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad, Apple forced to advertise as such

A UK judge has ruled that Samsung Electronics didn’t copy the iPad design for its Galaxy Tab tablets, and that Apple must advertise as such in order to undo the “real commercial harm” (as stated by Samsung lawyer Kathryn Pickard) caused by the company’s claims. Apple and Samsung have been fighting a long, drawn-out legal battle over whether or not the iPad was the source of inspiration for the Galaxy Tab tablets for some time now.

According to Judge Colin Birss, Apple will have to publish a notice on the front page of the company’s UK website for six months stating that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad. The Cupertino-based electronics giant will also be required to buy ad space in various UK newspapers and magazines like the Financial Times, Daily Mail, Guardian Mobile magazine, and T3 in the hopes of reaching people who don’t visit Apple’s website.

Apple, for its part, is understandably upset by this ruling. “No company likes to refer to a rival on its website,” said Apple lawyer Richard Hacon. The fact that it’s prejudicial to the company, painting the iPad in a bad light, makes it even worse. Judge Birss, however, merely stated that “[Apple is] entitled to [its] opinion.”

Samsung names Kwon Oh-hyun new CEO, doesn’t throw away experienced CEO

Samsung Samsung names Kwon Oh hyun new CEO, doesnt throw away experienced CEO

Things are shaking up a bit at Samsung, and for once it’s not due to frustration over failed policies or poor business choices. Choi Gee-sung is the outgoing CEO, but he isn’t “going” so much as moving—into an ‘overwatch’ position as the head of corporate strategy. The Incoming CEO is Kwon Oh-hyun, who until now had been the top dog of Samsung’s component business.

“There’ll be no major changes in overall strategy as Kwon will continue to oversee the components business, while telecoms and consumer electronics are separately run by other executives,” said James Song, analyst at KDB Daewoo Securities.

“Choi is the best candidate [for the head of corporate strategy position] who can chart Samsung through the global economic crisis and ever-intensifying competition,” Samsung said in a statement, citing an unnamed executive. “Under Choi, Samsung plans to pursue innovative changes.”

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus WiFi dated, priced for US market

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus WiFi dated, priced for US market

Samsung announced on Friday that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus WiFi will be released in the US on November 13. A 1.2GHz dual-core processor powers the device’s 7-inch LCD (running at a resolution of 1024 x 600), as does the 1GB of RAM. Also included is a 3MP camera with support for 720p HD video.

The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus runs Android 3.2 “Honeycomb” and weighs in at just 345g with a thickness of 9.96mm. In addition to the usual WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus includes infrared, allowing users to control media devices around the house. This functionality is improved upon by the free Peel app, which can be used to find content and enable compatibility with various devices.

The device is up for preorder now, and the 16GB version will retail for $400 when it hits stores on November 13. A 32GB version will hit early next year, at a rumored $499. All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus looks like a pretty good Android tablet.

Apple blocks Samsung Galaxy Tab sales in Australia

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Apple blocks Samsung Galaxy Tab sales in AustraliaApple has managed to secure a temporary injunction against sales of Samsung Galaxy tablets in Australia. According to the ruling, which was announced on Thursday by Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett, Samsung Electronics Co. is not allowed to sell the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia until further notice.

Apple filed the lawsuit against Samsung in July, claiming that the South Korean device manufacturer violated Apple’s patents by copying the designs of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung, of course, disagreed with this accusation and responded by countersuing Apple for violating its wireless technology patents.

The two companies aren’t always at each other’s throats, however. Samsung actually supplies device components to Apple, one of its biggest customers. But they also compete in the consumer device space, in what Microsoft has often dubbed “coopetition.”

Hopefully Samsung will be able to get its tablets back on the Australian market very quickly. Whether or not the Galaxy Tab 10.1 actually copies Apple products has yet to be determined, but it’s still a great piece of hardware.
